Visa Information for Trekking in Nepal
Before embarking on your trekking adventure in Nepal, it’s essential to ensure you have the proper visa to enter the country. Nepal offers different types of visas for tourists, and understanding the visa process is vital for a hassle-free journey.
Types of Visas Available for Tourists
Tourist Visa (Visa on Arrival)
Nepal provides a Visa on Arrival for tourists, which is convenient for those planning to visit the country for trekking and adventure activities.
Eligibility: Available to citizens of all countries, except for a few that are listed under restricted nations.
Duration: Tourist visas are available for 15, 30, or 90 days.
Cost:
15 Days: USD 30
30 Days: USD 50
90 Days: USD 125
Extension: Tourist visas can be extended for up to 150 days in total.
Where to Get It: Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), or at certain border entry points.
Tourist Visa (Before Arrival) You can also apply for a visa at the nearest Nepali embassy or consulate in your country before arriving in Nepal. This option might be preferred by travelers who want to avoid any delays upon arrival.
Application Process: Submit the visa application form along with required documents and payment to the Nepali embassy or consulate.
Duration and Fees: The visa fees and duration are the same as those for the Visa on Arrival.
Required Documents for Visa Application
Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into Nepal.
Visa Application Form: Complete the form available at the Nepali embassy, consulate, or on the website of the Nepal Tourism Board.
Passport-Sized Photos: You may need to submit recent passport-sized photographs (2-3).
Payment: Payment for the visa fee, which can be made via cash or credit card at the visa counter (if applying for a visa on arrival).
Additional Visa Information for Trekking in Nepal
Trekking Permits & Visa:
Trekking in Nepal requires specific permits (such as TIMS, national park permits, or restricted area permits), but these are separate from the visa. The trekking permits can be arranged upon your arrival in Nepal through a trekking agency or at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).
Visa Extension:
If you wish to stay longer than your initial visa period, you can extend your tourist visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Extensions are typically granted in increments of 15, 30, or 90 days. However, the total duration of stay cannot exceed 150 days in a calendar year.
Visa Requirements for Restricted Areas:
If your trek involves visiting restricted areas (such as Upper Mustang, Manaslu, or Dolpo), additional restricted area permits are required. These can be arranged through a registered trekking agency and should be obtained prior to your trip.
Single Entry vs. Multiple Entry Visas:
Single Entry Visa: Ideal for travelers planning a one-time visit to Nepal.
Multiple Entry Visa: If you plan to leave and re-enter Nepal during your stay, a multiple-entry visa may be more suitable.
